One of the world’s richest women just married a science teacher. The new marriage of MacKenzie Scott, ex-wife of Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, and Dan Jewett was first reported by the Wall Street Journal on Sunday. This must make him the world’s richest teacher, right?!
Giving away billions
Scott received a quarter of Bezos’ Amazon shares when the two divorced in 2019 after 25 years of marriage. Forbes reports her fortune is around $53 billion. She is actively trying to give away most of her wealth, though. She’s involved with an organization called the Giving Pledge, which urges the earth’s wealthiest people to donate the majority of their money to charity.
Scott donated $4.2 billion to 384 organizations in December 2020 alone. “I will keep at it until the safe is empty,” she wrote on the Giving Pledge website.
A teacher fairytale
According to People, Jewett was a science teacher at the private school Scott’s four children attended in Seattle. This is how the couple met and sources say they were seen frequently attending campus events together. So, single teachers, have hope! Your perfect partner may literally show up at your classroom door and want you to help them give away billions of dollars!
“I am married to one of the most generous and kind people I know — and I’m joining her in a commitment to pass on an enormous financial wealth to serve others,” Jewett wrote on their Giving Pledge page. “I look forward to the growth and learning I have ahead as a part of this undertaking with MacKenzie.”
It seems likely that with a teacher by her side, many educational organizations will benefit from her generosity. With a teacher in the White House, and now a teacher helping to donate billions of dollars, 2021 is already shaping up to be a big year for educators.
Congrats to the newlyweds, MacKenzie Scott and Dan Jewett!
